Practical guide

Driving in the ghats: tips for first-timers

Hairpins, mist and buses coming the other way. How to enjoy the climb.

Going up

Stay in a low gear on the bends and keep left. Uphill traffic has right of way on narrow stretches, but buses always win; give them room.

Coming down

Use engine braking: the same gear you'd climb in. Riding the brakes all the way down overheats them.

Mist and rain

Headlights on, speed down, and don't stop on a bend. If visibility goes, wait it out at a safe spot.

Tips

  • Automatic cars with hill hold, like the Glanza, make stop-start climbs easier.
  • Honk before blind hairpins.
